1895 Baughan gas engine

A friend sent me this to look at, this chap is selling a few engines. I can't find this one in the A-Z, not under "Baughan" anyway.

Anyone know this maker?

Nice engine, but not immediately recognisable. You might like to look at this though

confirms that one William Henry Baughan, Electrical Engineer, lived at

58 Queens road, St. Giles Parish (presumably Charlbury or thereabouts, he certainly appears to have been born there) in 1901.

Cliff also sent a pdf of an ad. from the 1899 local directory, anyone want a copy? It mentions "gas, oil and wind engines" though doesn't state whether of own manufacture or bought in.

Passed this over to Pat Knight who opined that it could be Godiva and further noted that it is the 'wrong way' round as far as valve gear etc positioning is concerned (though how one side of an engine came to be preferred over the other is anybodies guess). I had a glance at A-Z this lunch time and yes, it does bear a strong resemblance to that marque, furthermore one illustration, of an oil version, shows a 'left hooker' - case closed?

BTW. thanks for starting this fascinating thread Peter, shame it didn't attract a few more posters.

Nick,

Thanks for doing all the research - it looks like you and Patrick have come up with a good answer - The Godiva looks pretty much identical, the governor, rocker arm, base all look the same.

Please send that pdf if possible, thanks!
