Boy is this one doing the rounds and the de-roofed police car for the same reason.
As for being over the top, not in the case of suspected back injury. One false move and the person can be paralysed from that point in the spine down, so in the case of a neck vertebra...
The moral is don't put someone from a car accident in the back of your car for comfort.
