Gentlemen,
A Top Fuel Dragster uses 20 gals of fuel in 4.70 seconds, the time it takes to travel a quarter of a mile.

I used to have an Hillman Avenger like that ..................
:-
They are an absolute must see at least once on your life - completely scary to anyone with engineering sympathies. I was going to pass on more stats - but this link has it all

I stood next to one at Goodwood under similar circumstances. (2 years ago?) It causes that thud in the chest like being near a mortar when its fired. But repeatedly ;-) If memory serves that one was a 'mere' 3000 bhp. BTW, the nitromethane residue in the air smelled great after that quick 'blip', but it triggered a nasty asthma attack

I used to live in a small village about six miles from Podington (Santa Pod) And you could clearly hear the races. Great sound. Basso profundo.
My Hillman Avenger did about 35 mpg. Cost me 90 pounds to buy. Then another 80 for a "recon" engine, replaced under guarantee after 4 months for another recon engine - the suppliers said they ran them without oil to make sure they worked...
Cost me another 20 notes to have the front subframe (I think) replaced. Done at a certain tank building factory in Newcastle.. (I think they went a bit overboard wirth the additional cross bracing...)
One of my favourite old bikes did about 15 mpg.... Kawasaki H1A BRM
623J . 500c two stroke triple... Bit like riding a grenade.. Brilliant accelleration, poor drum brakes, "interesting" handling -(the frame had a habit of cracking under the engine) ... a point and shoot device... Loved it to bits but couldn't afford the running costs so I replaced it.. But the induction roar was wonderful...
Avenger Tiger? Orange with a black Starsky & Hutch stripe? One of the thirstiest cars I've ever driven, including the V8s
