OT Spring is sprung

Gentlemen,

I have just heard one of the most feared noises known to man, the sound of somebody using a lawnmower. I my wife hears it then that means my life will revert to slavery, I hate cutting the grass.

I can think of two possible solutions:

  1. Get wife to mow grass - maybe one of those hover jobs if she finds a regular mower too heavy.

  1. Purchase a vintage lawn mower with an interesting engine - there were some displayed at the Tabley steam fair last year that looked far more interesting than many of the stationary engine exhibits!

Gentlemen,

All very good idea's with flaws,

  1. my wife is disabled which is why I do it.
  2. lawn not big enough for ride on etc.
  3. I would have to look after the animals.
  4. knowing my luck Robot Mower would breakdown.

My only other solution is concrete and green paint. Charles I can hedge trim chainsaw and shred till the cows come home :-))

Perhaps one of these, top left (especially) or right, might make the experience more enjoyable.

My local lawn mower fixer bloke has never been so busy...........and to cap it all...I looked out last Friday and saw the local council actually doing some work.......mowing the grass verges !

Assuming you'd prefer to be tinkering rather than actually cutting, a vintage machine sounds like a good idea. To maximise the tinker/cut ratio, how about an Allen Scythe? Renowned for being all but impossible to re-start while hot, it should also ensure that there are plenty of interuptions to proceedings for you to cool down with a beer while the machine does likewise ;-)

BTW, the sprunging of spring seem to have brought out a bumper crop of engines on ebay over the weekend.

Yes indeed, I noticed that as well, more likely financial reasons though.

That's a depressing thought.

Up to a point, but think of the extra engines that it makes available for everyone else, that would have sat inside a shed.

Some are overpriced unfortunately, but that goes for a lot of gear on ebay these days, sellers are way too optimistic about prices and set prices that are too high as starters IMO. Peter

De-lurk!

I have been provoked into de-lurking by your shocking slander of the allen scythe. I have never had any problems re-starting them when hot, now - when cold I have been known to get a little fed up with winding the rope round the pulley. Of course an Allen scythe for cutting a small lawn could open up all sorts of other opportunities for garden work - replanting flowers and shrubs fixing allen scythe size holes in hedges/fences etc. And then there would be the trips to the chiropracter to look forward to! I humbly apologise for repeating what I admit is nothing but hearsay (or should that be heresy?) for comedy effect ;-)
