RE Chris Quayle

Gentlemen,

Not wishing any ill on Mr Quayle but I tried to send him a reply off of NG and my computer said an unknown program was trying to access my address book did I want to continue. Answer no I didn't. Just a friendly warning.

Might be genuine, seems odd that someone suddenly pops up with loads of engine info out of nowhere, but it does happen...:-))

This _is_ a jolly group. First time I post here for years and I get my ear clipped :-(. Sorry if my post caused offence, but the email address is intentionally wrong to prevent spam. A common thing to do on the groups if you want avoid dozens of unwanted messages a day. Real email address is:

aero.sys@ntlworld_com (you decipher the rest)

if you want to get in touch off group.

As to your address book, how any plain text news post could cause any effect on your computer beats me, but suggest you check your machine for viruses. However, most virus checkers cry wolf more often than they need to. It's like government policy, keep people frightened so they stay nice and subservient and keep buying the updates.

Apparently even paranoids have real emenies :-)...

Regards,

Chris

There have been some pretty awful people here, Chris, so we do tend to be a bit 'paranoid' about these things :-))

Martin runs XP so should be OK, I didn't have the problem myself and no warnings came up on my machine running 2000.

Don't be sorry Chris, there are a minority of people here who think they own this group and need educating to the fact that they don't. As to the suggestion that any two posters who share 4 letters in their email address must be the same person, well, I'm sure you've drawn your own conclusions 8-).

Martin,

The message you received is (on my machine) a function of Outlook. I am assuming you use Outlook for mail and outlook Express (or something else) for News. My address book is held on Outlook but if I try to send from another application other than Outlook, that application it will attempt to access Outlook's address book hence the timely warning in case you have a virus and are going to spam us all :-)

Thanks for that. Don't post here very often as don't have much to say. Sold most of my engine collection some time ago, though really had the bug at one point. Moved on I guess - started going to airshows to sell aero bits and ended up with a Rover apu which I used to take to Bruntingthorpe and Popham from time to time. I find interests go in phases here, sort of like rotation of the hobbies, so perhaps engines will have a renewal. Never did find a good supercharged 2 stroke diesel, even though one was broken up for the bearings etc at the old Passey yard not far from Oxford.

As for spam, can't believe some of the posts in the last few days, but life's too short to read such rubbish never mind respond to it. If you ignore it, it eventually goes away. Such is the democracy of the internet...

You're welcome, don't get me wrong, there are good people here with lots of valuable experience to share. I know exactly what you mean about interests going in phases, mine have always done so I keep a wide range on the go and just migrate from one to another as the fancy takes me. I take the view that hobbies are for fun, when you start doing something 'cos you feel you should then what's the difference from work 8-). At the moment my interest is mainly on the classic Land Rover I've just bought, but the Lister gen set renovation will draw me back at some point. Greg

I started off very much main stream - got myself a Lister D, then a Wolseley WD2 and finally a Crossley 1075 & a bloody great Parsons' engine. But they were either too simple & unsophisticated for my tastes or so heavy as to be immovable by one bloke in a cramped garage working on his own.

My tastes have always been towards complication and sophistication & I find aircraft piston APU's very satisfying.

I have evolved to collecting air cooled flat twins & more or less have a representative of most engines of this type made in the last seventy years.

My latest acquisition is a little Stuart Turner flat twin which is great fun and fairly unusual.

That said, I have a tendency to small gas turbines & have twitched several times when seeing Rover GT's on e-bay!

Peter, I use Outlook with XP and until the other day I have never seen the message and have not since I replied to others off NG except Chris's posting. One has to assume the worst.

Actually, the worst would be that your computer was infected with something.

To assume it must be someone else's fault is a bit of a cop out.

I would suggest you discover the real cause of the problem, because as it stands it is still with your computer.
