small engine handbook

Looking for stuff about the Johnson Utilimotor (ancestor of the Mar-Vil) the other day, I came across this:-

I was vaguely aware of its existence but rather thought it was a sort of Haynes style repair manual for modern lawn mowers etc - actually it looks rather interesting. Funny how these worthy little lumps seem to excite far more interest in the USA than over here.

I like the engine on P28 of the preview. One cylinder fed by 4 carbs! That's a lawnmower engine worth showing.

I cant see P28, but I'm pretty sure I've seen that engine on a previous visit - wonder if the preview gives a random selection of pages?

No, It was the Mc Culloch on P43 - only three carbs on that one!

I think it's a random page preview. I looked at work and saw different pages to those I see at home. Repeat visits from the same PC give the same results though. Very clever.

The engine's definately on P28 and it's got 4 carbs. 2 side draught and 2 downdraught. They all look the same though. It's a West Bend 820 badged as a Chrysler after they took WB over in 1965. This particular variant was intended for karting so not exactly a stationary engine. It looks rather like a Briggs & Stratton but with a horizontal cylinder.

Google (chrysler 820 engine kart) and look at books.google.com (2nd down) and it should take you there.

Certainly does! the carbs with their finned velocity stacks look to be the same type as on the McCulloch - I guess these were 'bolt on goodie' kits for the karting fraternity.
