Nick - good point

When I wanted a solid state relay or two and some temperature controllers for a small heat treatment furnace I bought them from the USA (via eBay) but they were made in Hong Kong. UK prices for similar things were WAY over one pound to the dollar - which is already a 50% markup.

When I wanted a programmable fuel injection system from Holley I phoned the states number (Summit Racing), and the regular phone person understood it was international and put me through and the deal was done - easy. The only tip I would give is to use a Courier and not normal air mail. With a Courier you get a number to track it, normal air mail can take 3 weeks - I think it goes to London to assess the import duties, the cost of which always seem trivial, but your don't want to wait for weeks while it goes through the system !

I really wouldn't feel shy about buying direct from the USA - but it is a LITTLE near for Christmas if it is a present !!

Today I saw a modern Stirling engined fan, one of a recent batch (2 years??) from India. Aside from the upfront £200, the import duty, carriage & VAT cost him £70 on the doorstep!

Ouch............
