Bachmann DCC Set

In the DCC set with 2 locos (thomas and percy... for want of a better description) how easy would it be to remove the dcc decoders and put them into something decent (with sockets)?

Are the decoders plugging into a socket on the loco?

Bachmann claim the decoders are basically the Lenz ones. If I fit the bachmann decoders and later upgrade the control equipment to a Lenz unit, will I need to replace all the Bachmann decoders?

Very difficult if not impossible. Besides which the Bachmann chip is not one I would want in another loco.

No, they are hard wired to the PC board.

Bachmann claims its decoders are fully compatible with any 3rd generation control unit including Lenz.

Actually they're part of the DCC board rather than wired into it.

What about the 25 in the other digital set? can the decoder be removed from that?

If so, which decoder is supplied?

what about the set with the class 25 is it a separate decoder and if so, which? (though I must admit, this is less attractive idea....)

No,you're both wrong. The decoders in Stuart and Greg are seperate and can be removed. They are basically the same as the Lenz 1000,but not identical. It is possible to work out which wire does what and wire up the decoders into another loco.I've managed to fit one into a Bachmann On30 Porter 0-4-0.

That is definitely built into the pcb on top of the chassis block.

If Bachmann have NMRA DCC certification or claim it then it should work with all other DCC systems, DCC is the protocal used by command stations and decoders to talk to each other. Assuming the DCC command station you buy is also DCC certified or claims to be.

Bachmann decoders are manufactured for them by Lenz. I have used their

36-550 (LE1014E) decoder widely with my Lenz Compact so compatibility is not an issue, although you may possibly have to reset factory default settings as Bachmann seem to feel they need to fiddle with these to get them to work with their E-Z Command DCC controller.

The reality is that Bachmann locos are riddled with capacitors which seem to hamper reliable DCC operation, and should be removed before using on any DCC set up.
