I suggest you take it to an auction house that specialises in toy auctions and ask one of their valuers.

Collectors don't seem particularly interested in Chad Valley and I'd suggest your acquisition has little significant value.

If you want to find their true value stick them on eBay and you'll get a pretty accurate guide.

Or not, as the case may be.

I reckon eBay gives a fairly accurate statement of market value - which after all is only 'what someone is prepared to pay on the day'. Such values can vary enormously and are controlled by supply and demand.

It's amazing how often when something sells for a high price on eBay that all and sundry scour their atics and suddenly the market is flooded with further examples of the same item. Clearly the response to that is a significant drop in price, at least in the short term.

It's good to see the market react in this way. It certainly makes a nonsense of any published price guides, which tend to assume because something once sold at a certain level that it should become the established price for the item.

Indeed. And its not just model railway items. How many times do you see on one of those auction/car boot sale type programs, the expert pronounce on something "This should easily fetch between £80 and £100", only for it to go for £10 in the auction room, simply because that was all someone was prepared to pay on the day.

Doesn't quite show that - you need two people who want it and are prepared to pay to drive up the price at auction. The winner in the ten quid case may be thinking "Phew - what a bargain. I'd have gone to £100 for that - lucky I didn't have to".

It showed the market value on the day - which is precisely what I said and what John Ruddly claimed.

Even worse is when they tell the seller "We've made a total of £2,000" and the first item hasn't been auctioned yet! Most of the crap on those shows you'd have to pay me to cart away.

Nevertheless, an early Triang radio-controlled boat went for an astonishing figure on one those shows which is why I think a "toy" as opposed to model collector will pay good money for the Chad-Valley stuff.

You may be right, and eBay will confirm your thoughts or otherwise.
