Crich Tramway & Bachmann HO Trams

Paid a visit to the Crich Tramway the other day. They are doing building wok to create a new display and the shop is on the first floor of the pub until work is completed.

They had some HO Bachmann trams for about =A328 each which compared to say Hatton's internet prices are good value.

Do they run well ?

The PCCs and Brills cost about US$45 from Walthers, but their prices are on the high side.

In my experience, so so. They have cheap mechanisms with plastic gear trains. They have internal lights wired in series to slow the motor down. Some people have used the chassis to motorise Corgi Blackpool trams.

Bowser PCCs are of much better quality, but cost about 3 times as much.

Assuming they haven't upgraded the mechanisim since they were first produced about 1970 then they probably don't operate to modern expectation, but back circa

1970 they ran exctremely well for their price. Add lots of weight inside and they will run quite well. Better than the nasty Mehano 4 wheel tram and possibly better than a Rivarossi tram of the same era. If you're fussy then factor in the cost of a Black Beetle or similar.
