Hornby Class 50s

Being reported elsewhere that review samples of the new class 50 diesel from Hornby are with the specialist press NOW. Initial comments are extremely favourable, despite the model allegedly being fitted with traction tyres.

Expect them in the shops very soon.

Oh No.... Not the traction tyre again!. It's been so nice not having to clean track and wheels soo often running the Bachmann items... Guess the cleaner will have to come out again..

Mind you, if it is traction tyred and has the bulk under the body of a Bachmann 25 or 37, it really will pull well! without slipping!

Ha, thats another part that will be leaving my Class 67's as well - ruddy traction tyres will be going in the bin (possibly with the "model" still attached)

If they are using traction tyres on the Class 50 it would suggest that like the Lima 67 it does'nt have a diecast chassis!

I've resigned my only Hornby kettle (A3) to the display cabinet where it will never leave due to the fact that it continously looses traction tyres and can't pull anything (plus the dreaded pickups on the loco fowled the driving wheels, and an attempted repair (I urm unscrewed the bottom of the loco and then read that I should'nt have) so it constantly jams.

Also traction tyres cause the locos to wobble badly whilst running.

What's 'allegedly' about it, those who have had their hands on it report that the traction tyres, as shown on the service sheet you can download from

are indeed fitted. Also that they appear to be unneccessary as it has 12 wheel drive and plenty of weight. But favourable reaction, oh yes, its on my Christmas list now. Keith Make friends in the hobby. Visit Garratt photos for the big steam lovers.

Do what the rest of us do and change the wheels! Keith

I think I will - what wheels do you use?

Depends, if it has 2mm axles I would use Branchlines solid disc wheels, if its some other size probably Alan Gibson. Quite likely also that Ultrascale will produce a drop in set.

White L.E.D's, yellow L.E.D's and red L.E.D's for the opposite end, but they still insist on fitting traction tyres when we're trying to eradicate their use in an attempt to keep the track cleaner.....perhaps white-rubber tyres would keep the track cleaner for longer.....they could always develope a none-conducting water-cannon spray-system ;-))

Colin Meredith.
