Hornby screaming class 50s

Had a customer today report that after approximately 30 minutes of use on a large continuous run layout (Retford as it happens) his Hornby class 50 which has, incidentally, been easily converted to EM gauge, started screaming. Investigation revealed the problem was caused by dry bearings on the shaft drive to the roof fan, and was cured by a quick application of light oil.

Well, quite. Having only just got back into things following about 15 years away from the hobby, I'm amazed at how much has changed and developed in that time. Hornby, in particular, have changed dramatically - they used to be a bit crappy in years gone by, in particular, I always thought the motors were a bit wimpy. But looking at their current range, I have to say I'm impressed...a working roof fan?!?

That said, one of Hornby's nicest models ever in my opinion was the Class

110 DMU - now 20+ years old. It stood out above a lot of their other models.
