Hornby Fowler 2-6-4 Tank

I purchased the above second hand in a box marked: R239 BR Locomotive Class 4P 2-6-4T.

I am puzzled because the centre driving wheels are grooved but have no traction tyres and the model shop insists that this model never did. Can anyone clarify please?

The model shop is wrong. For your loco, Service Sheet 122A applies and that clearly shows traction tyres (part number L6241) on the centre drivers.

That's pretty much correct, except the earliest of the Fowler 2-6-4T locos were without traction tyres, but did NOT have grooves in the centre wheels. These can easily be identified as they were fitted with the X04 motors.

The ones with the later cheaper motors did indeed have traction tyres on the centre drivers.

Roger mentioned that he had R239, hence my mention of Service Sheet

122A! Sheet 122 covers the older ones without traction tyres.

Sorry Paul, I wasn't criticising your comment, just pointing out that the earliest Fowler's didn't have traction tyres, which might explain why the retailer concerned got it wrong.
