Off Topic - Postings to Usenet Groups by One.Tel ISP

Sorry to take up space but I am wondering if any other subscribers using the One.Tel ISP are having trouble posting to uk.rec.models.rail (and other Newsgroups) by Outlook Express (or any other method).

About every month, One.Tel seems to have a news server breakdown although they do not admit it on their Network Status webpage.

For the last three weeks though, messages have been coming through fairly frequently but when I have tried to respond or post my own ramblings, they will not leave my Outbox. Eventually I get a message "Your NNTP server has not responded in 60 seconds. Would you like to wait another 60 seconds for the server to respond? Account news.onetel.net.uk, Server news.onetel.net.uk"

I am getting no help at all from One.Tel. All they suggest is that I delete my e-mail account and re-create it but ordinary e-mails are working OK.

Are there any other One.Tel subscribers having this same problem?

If there is no problem at One.Tel, does anybody have any other suggestion?

Slating my use of Outlook Express would not be particularly helpful :~)

I know nothing of one.tel but if they're anything like NTL forget it, I use ...

It's German but it's free and they generally keep it clean from "buy viagra here" type messages. Obviously you've got to register and their policies are pretty comprehensive - but well intentioned and straight forward.

... oh and it's free - did I mention that :-)

If you click on : ( at the top when you first open outlook express ) Tools Accounts News Do you see you one tel account? If you do then click on: Properties Server You should see : news.onetel.net.uk ( I am just going by what you posted as I don't use one tel ) but you may not need the UK bit at the end

I don't think you should have a tick in the " This server requires me to log on " , so if there is untick it and try that. You can change things under the General tab to whatever you like, it will not alter your e-mail settings.

Most ISPs have this problem from time-to-time and rarely report such problems on their Network Status pages.

Mine, Kingston Communications in Hull, don't acknowledge any problems unless a significant number of people complain about the same incident.

The message from "John Turner" contains these words:

In that case I'm rather happy to be with Zetnet: if there's a problem it's admitted and sorted very quickly. It helps when technical support staff and managers also post to newsgroups...

Yes, I share this problem, and am also fed up with Onetels lack of progress. Below my latest rant at them Hello,

About 2 weeks ago, I wrote pointing out that I was unable to upload messages to newsgroups via News.onetel.net.uk

Looking at threads on Google, I am aware that all of your customers are similarly affected.

For the last two days, we have not been able to download messages from News.onetel.net.uk either.

What is the problem and when is it going to be solved ? Is this not part of what we pay our £13.99 per month for ? Are you prepared to refund any of this cost when 50% of the service is not available

NOTE : please to not reply with a standard Emali setting out how to set up my pc to reveive newsgroup messages, I already know this. To do so would demonstrate that you have not read and understood the Email"

regards

Chris Wilson, Thanks for that suggestion. It took 4 days to get registration details but it seems to work brilliantly for both reading and posting. By contrast, trying to use One.Tel, no news was down loaded on 29/9 and only 1 message on 28/9 for uk.rec.models.rail. It took 3 weeks to upload a message which meant that my Inbox and Outbox were also clogged up.

Chris Clarke, I have also sent strong messages to One.Tel about their news service (lack of). I was offered apologies and told that the network status page would be updated but surprise, surprise it never has been. Suggest you take up Chris Wilson's suggestion and register for news.individual.net

Mal in Oz, One.Tel was originally part of the Australian outfit but when it went pear shaped, Centrica took over the British set-up. They also own British Gas and the Automobile Association.

Thanks to all for helpful suggestions.

Dave, I have similar problems with freeseve on normal mail (i.e Pop 3) where it sits and does nothing.... I think it is very frustrating and another way of keeping us on line for longer to get more 1p-per mins out of us on the phone bill!

Catch you soon..
