Had you wanted to know what was meant by the phrase used, in a non-trolling/goading way, you could have used the following equally valid question...

What does that mean then?

Hog factor is calculated by a fairly complex formula that takes account of the number of new threads posted, the total number of posts, the total number of lines and the percentage of quoted material in follow-ups. Essentially, it tries to give an idea of which contributors tend to be predominant in the group, with a weighting towards those with bad habits such as not snipping properly. I'm still tweaking the algorithm, so it shouldn't be relied on to be consistent.

: That would not have given the answer I was looking for.

Then you admit that you were trolling/goading, you have been caught hook line and sinker by your own words and deeds...

The answer is the same regardless of example unless you were asking about one posters posting history.

?

I was.

For all I know it could indicate you were a model (pardon the pun) poster.

You keep telling me to get a clue, don't jump down my throat when I try.

Or is all this bluster just your attempt at a smoke screen?

Total crap, the answer would have indicated as such, as it did, Marks answer proves that.

Then try harder, try thinking before posting the first thing that comes to mind. If it looks like a troll then it's highly likely to be a troll - if you can't rephrase, then make it clear that it's not your intension to troll. Simple really, just needs a bit of thought first before pressing that "send" button!

(snip 300+ lines of re quoted stat's, the equivalent to a 20KB text file, equivalent to 20 1KB previously posted messages being expired (deleted) from nntp servers around the world earlier than they need to be...)

: : Have to question the accuracy 'cos I got into several of the lower groups : without actually (apparently) being a contributor. ;o)

With how you quote previous messages that might not be such a bad thing, don't do it again! :~o

[Note to Chris (or is it Dragon...), this is not being pedantic, I've tried to explain why in the comment above.]

No surprises there. Except maybe the last one - zero crossposts.

So Google Groups appears to be the third most popular injection point, suggesting that "almost 300 registered members on this group" is perhaps a little inaccurate.

Google's "subscribers" figure refers to people who are subscribed to read the group via their web interface. It won't necessarily be the same as the number who use Google to post to the group in any one month. If I ran the stats for a whole year, then the number of Google posters would probanbly be closer to their subscribers figure - a lot of them probably only post occasionally.

Many probably only post once, and that is were Google's problem is, and why so many people regard all Google posts with suspicion until the poster proves that he or she is not either a spammer or troll...

Re: Mark Goodge's Stats for uk.rec.models.rail, 2009-02

The 'Contributors by number of NEW threads' I found interesting for two reasons :-

The total absence of one contributor

I accept this is not really the place to ask this ( or is it ? ) but as we are on the subject .....

The fact that only 'Dragon Heart' appeared on the list, not my other 'identity'. I have noticed myself that since changing my ISP that when I start a new post I am shown as 'Dragon Heart' yet when I reply to a.n.others post etc. is comes up as my other 'identity'.

As this is NOT deliberate on my part, and just for curiosity, why ? I have a guess but that's all it is.

It would appear to be some bizarre feature (or bug) of Google Groups. I can't see any other obvious reason.

A terminal case of operator error, if he has two accounts he must be logging into a specific account on page launch (via the set cookie), otherwise he would need to select which account to use and then log-in...

It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of fight in the dog.

PS Thanks for the advice Adrian ;-)
