147 units were built by British Rail Engineering Ltd at York for the Provincial Sector of British Rail between 1984 and 1987. Provincial went on to become Regional Railways before privatisation and the units subsequently passed to new operators. Split into three sub-classes, Bachmann and Graham Farish are concentrating on the Class 150/1 and Class 150/2 versions. These two car units are currently in service with a number of Passenger Train Operating Companies in England and Wales.

There have been strange goings on with their dealer website - I've not been able to access it since just before Christmas, or could it be that their security is a tad better than Hornby's?

Exactly what I've been getting since just before Christmas. No big issue mind, but it would have been nice to be able to check between Christmas what they had in stock.

If that's the problem with the dealer site it would have been nice to have been notified in advance that this would happen.

Hey, Be nice just to have internet access full stop ! For some odd reason, my D-Link router is only allowing e-mails - I can't reset it, just says operation timed out when it tries to detect the settings and nothing happens with either Firefox or Exploder ! Have tried with and without Zone Alarm but I'm stuck at their mercy. And guess what, the Telephone number in the manual for Colindale in London is now a dead line. PC world will not take it back as I didn't keep the till receipt 8 months ago...

So, Is there anything good on Hornby or Bachmanns websites ? I would love to see them !

Andy

P.S. For anyone that can help, it's the D-Link DSL-G604T model.

Well, it's certainly letting through more than emails as you can post to Usenet (port 119), ports 25 (outgoing) and 110 (incoming) are used for email. Can you check what port your router / modem is using for web access, *IIRC* it should be 80 for normal http//: access and 8080 for https//: access.

Can your browser access the routers set put pages, if not it sounds like your browser / Firewall / Skyware filter etc. has blocked access for some reason!

The UK support number is quoted as being 0845 612 0003 on their web page.

They should take it back, but for exchange only if you do not have the receipt. Sale of Goods Act still applies and the item has to be of saleable quality for a reasonable period of time.

Talk to Trading Standards.

In the meantime 2007 has started off brilliantly computer-wise. Office won't load on my home PC, won't uninstall and won't let me reinstall either.

Bloody computers!

Andy,

I have the same router. Whenever I have had any problems with it, I have just unplugged the power for a few seconds and it has reset itself. I presume that you have tried that.

Now what's wrong with giving the Foxfield and Wimblebury a small plug as they were running on New Years Day when we weren't? All CVR Volunteers had been invited for a free ride with mince pies and sherry so how did you miss that?

It's convinced me that I want a Hornby R2556. We might borrow it one day.

Have a good new year.

Ah, this will be the new improved 2007 version of Office, I suspect.

Microsoft have enhanced it so that it will only install properly on a computer located in an actual office. That is why it is called Office. If you want it to install at home, you have buy the licence upgrade for "extended locations". I thought everyone knew this!

Err, so if I took something into your shop and claimed that I had bought it from you (the fact that you stock the item being why I walked in off the street) you would have to exchange it even though I had no proof that I had bought from you - seems strange to me and very unfair on the trader!

It is very unfair, but that is my understanding of the situation. A receipt is not required to be even issued at the point of sale, therefore it cannot be a legal obligation to produce one if the item is faulty.

If there's any doubt consult your local trading standards office.

From what I remember (run in with a dodgy freeview box 14 months old and comet) you just have to be able to prove that you bought it there - obviously, a reciept is the easy answer but credit card bills etc have been accepted in court before now apparantly.

If the person can't produce any evidence of having bought it from you then they would get laughed out of court (which is where it would eventually end up I suppose).

You certainly can't wander into random stores just because they sell the same item although some high street stores will allow this (not refund though obviously!) as it's seen to be less hassle and good customer service. Argos and WH smiths certainly used to do this - I suspect this might be why they ask for your postcode and house number now?...

Indeed. Very handy people (albeit rather busy!)

I've told this tale before, but the owner of a long closed model shop in Hull was asked for a refund on a faulty item, but refused point blank. The complainant threatened trading standards but the shop owner stood his ground claiming that the item had not been purchased from him.

After a considerable and heated debate the customer asked how he 'knew' that he'd not purchased it from the shop.

"Because it's got another retailers price label still attached" he replied.

Doh!

A receipt is not necessary, but some proof of purchase such as a bank or credit card statement is required. If the item is obviously only available from the retailer (such as an own brand product) then you wont need a receipt or proof of purchase.

Whats the time scale involved in this, say you found an obvious manufacturing defect in a loco 18 months after purchase (think its 12 months warranty)

Cheers, Simon
