Railway Modellers got off very light compared to other pastimes discussed in the programme. Paraphrasing what Tony Slattery actually said:-
"These were the kind of kids who were always going to do well at school* as they were happy collecting just one piece at a time which eventually built into a full scale working layout". [*see footnote]
"The railway room was a place where fathers and sons could retreat to a perfectly ordered alternate world to escape the everyday problems of life". (No argument with that).
Methinks Slattery is or was a railway modeller himself? It's worth watching a repeat of the programme if you missed it first time around.
