Miners gala - no not them running up and down the tracks, but there will be some train rides. More importantly, ignore the whippet racing cos theres to be ferret racing.
Its a must see.....

Ferret racing? How do they keep the ferrets from going after each other or just having a game? Or getting away?!
Just one of the questions am hoping to be able to answer :-)
Oh, good! Full report then ...
They were small but fully grown, more pets than working animals - really cute. children were allowed to hold or stroke them ! Race was through a set of 6" diameter pipes over 10-15 feet, one ferret per pipe. Ferrets were encouraged to go along - was wire bit half way to see progress. At end several children waiting to catch them, but ferrets poked noses out and then helped out. They could have escaped if wanted to but didnt really seem bothered. Organisational disaster, but great fun to watch, lots children invited to 'help'. Great time had by all.
Special mention to Crystal, really nice young lady - who brought along her own ferret (Lisa) to see how she would manage in the racing, she let his lordship take Lisa for short walk on the lead.
Whole show was fun !
Cheers, Simon
Wow, sounds great! Glad you and HL had a good time. I must admit that 'ferret races' put me in mind of the ponies.
Any off track betting? :)
LOL - sudden vision of a bunch of kids wearing racing colours riding ferrets around a paddock!
Not a chance, was too much of a hilarious shambles.
Back on topic, there were train rides - but suspect diesels, Leicester model engineering had a stand showing some excellent models. Plus Whitick Historical society's stall had lots of excellent colliery photos from leics and south derby mines.
