I am sure everyone would know by now, but possibly not ...... any email or post that recommends trying out a patch, claiming to be from Microsoft is a virus/Trojan or similar program of malicious intent. open at your peril

What exactly does "people such as Microsoft" actually mean? I get *exactly* these kinds of unsolicited emails all the time from Hewlett Packard. It's part of the support package that comes with all their consumer printers nowadays. Yes, I know, I could switch them off, but that's not the point. It's the "_never_" in your message that I don't understand.
