Shaped as it is ? If it was made it into the shape of a driver it could then have slotted connections at the base - like computer card - and fit into the cab. Wires to motor etc.underneath cab. Makes for easy fitting, swapping and no hassle with space.

Might lead to some pretty obese train crew in the smaller scales.
Why not flexible circuit boards so they can be bent to fit whatever space is available ;-)
