TIG electrodes: thoria vs lanthanum

Feb 18, 2005 20 Replies

About 12 years ago, I bought about 20 pounds of tungstens for about $5 at a trade school that was going belly up. It was all 2% thoriated and pure tungstens, in 1/8" and 3/32". Basically a lifetime supply.

All this discussion of lanthanated tungstens being such an improvement motivated me to buy some lanthanated and try them out. They really are an improvement! Smoother arc, better low current and easier starts than the thoriated. I'm sold. Thanks Guys!
