hi can anybody tell me if in the regs that i need a rewire, the lighting cable is a twin pvc about 40 years old with wood switch boxes, i dont have any brass switches or brass lights, thanks for any advice

Well, yes, and no...
It helps to say which country you're in -- looks like UK.
Nowhere near enough info. A 40 year old PVC installation could still be fine. If there are no earth conductors in your lighting cable or they aren't connected up, then you should rewire the circuit at some time, and until then, only use plastic faced switch plates and double insulated light fittings. Wooden switch boxes are however older than 40 years, so you might be misjudging the age of the installation.
