I'm really not at all convinced that $300 to drag yourself from bed in the dead of night to go out and work on god only knows what for god only knows who is a rip off. Problem calls are MUCH higher at night. Maybe alot of people don't need the sleep I do but dragging myself around like that in the middle of the night will have me dragging @$# the next day.

That's right. The pro's know how valuable their time is. The wannabees are usually the cheapest around no matter the time.

Ah - ha, ... I was only talking " LOCAL LOCKOUTS". If they rang me at 2 am to rekey their car or house then the gloves are off. I got a call on Tuesday morning, 3.30 am, woman wanted a 'quote' to fit a deadlock the following day. I asked her if she knew what time it was, and she said our yellow pages ad said 24 hrs service. I said "WHAT, do you think someone sits by the God dam phone all night just in case some &%^#(&$ idiot wants a ^%$@(*% quote". After I hung up, I woke up, and tried to remember if I had just had phone call or was it just a dream. No .... not dreaming. Whoops !

"Thank god there are people who place little to no value on their personal time

Thank God there are bloody idiots like yourself who are willing to rape their customers. It has made our business one of the most successful locksmithing busineses in Queensland. People like yourself come and go all the time. Great ambitions.... charge like wounded bulls! Doesn't take long before you have completely abolished your customer base and you scream that busines is slow......... It's not really slow.... It's just you and your lack of ethics that are slow. AS this has become a waste of time here, I'll meander over to IL now. I hope you need a plmber tonight and I hope he shares your view on charging.................

Actually I haven't really needed to call anyone for service on anything in years I do it myself. You can't find any complaints from me with regard to business. I simply work smart instead of working myself to death. Where as you work 10 hours a day plus after hours call outs for little if any more than straight time. Your family if you have one must be thrilled with how little you value your time with them. Your little tirade has been wasted on me. It isn't my fault that you undervalue your time.

As memory serves from back when I used to do that sort of thing for way too little money alot of the automotive lockouts in the dead of night are drunks who left their keys in some bar along with their wallets, a fact they usually neglect to mention until you get there. You probably do it already but if not do yourself a favor and secure your services with their credit card before you go out to them.

If they rang me at 2 am

Careful nice2cu is going to be criticizing your ethics and telling you you are mistreating your customers simply because you don't want to give free quotes at

3:30 am.

Seems like your ad needs a qualifier... "24-hour EMERGENCY Service", as if your ad only says 24 hours you might get an oddity like that woman who is up all night long and gets to feeling kind of lonely and calls you in the middle of the night...

Using "EMERGENCY" in all caps like that also implies added cost, and makes people subconsciously rethink their situation and be sure that they want this done NOW rather than later...

Just my advice...

"nice2cu" -- It would be nice2know your name if you really feel that anyone who has posted their pricing plans and policies as to how the price of a job is calculated...

Either pony up on this or get off your high kibitizing horse...

How much do you think a tow truck operator charges for someone who breaks down in the middle of the night who isn't a member of one of those auto clubs...

Otherwise PLEASE shut up, at this point your opinion has been noted and continuing your tirade further at this point will only cause more damage to your shaky reputation here...

Steve ... you mean you DON'T? :-) :-)

I was asked the same question the other day (nite) and we DO NOT run 24 hr. service, "Why don't you have someone standing by ?"

This person operates a local printing shop, and my question back, was

"Do you have someone on standy by at 2 am when I need business cards printed?"

Guess what his answer was ..... :-)

kinda like when a car lot ask why your rates increased at the beginning of the year. I ask them if they sell their 04's for the same as the 03's. if not ? what's the percentage of mark-up ? I may have to re-adjust my prices :-) at that point, they usually laugh and say, go on and get out of hear.

I've gotta remember that one. Kinda like when I did a job for the local hamburger shop just down the road. He said I should only charge him half price for the service call, as he was only 'just down the street'. I said O.K. but from now on I want my fish & chips & hamburgers at half price as I'm only just up the street from you. He soon got the message. I have a policy on service calls. If my van makes it out of 2nd gear from my base, then you pay full price. :-)

I don't underestimate my value................... I just don't get on an International forum like this and and brag about how I screwed this customer and how overcharged that one and on and on. I work 10 hours a day usually because we are that busy. You've picked the wrong business if you think it a regular 9-5 job. You have no pride in what you do and you're proud of how well you can screw people for their money. Maybe if you did a little less bragging and worked a little harder you would have enough work to keep you busy 10 hours a day. Bottom line is still this........... I would bet the big bucks that my yearly income is at least 50% more than yours..................... I am proud enough of my industry to avoid getting on a forum like this and go into 'tirades' about how I got $300 for this and I won't go out at hours like that. It sounds like you are embarrased about your trade.............. Thank God you are not typical of most locksmiths that I know...... Don't over estimate your own value - let your your customers do it for you. Oh..... about doing everything yourself................ wasn't it you who was complaining about customers with hangers in the windows when you arrived????
