Professional journals, if there is one in the UK, might be a better bet.

Going out and beating the bushes yourself -- pick up the phone and call people, or drive around and walk into every shop you can find, asking whether they might need help, telling them what skills you've got and what jobs you're willing to take -- might be a better bet. If you impress folks favorably enough they might make room for you even if they weren't actively looking.

Be aware that as a new hire you're likely to be assigned the jobs nobody else wants -- 3AM car openings and sweeping the shop, not necessarily in that order -- until you prove you're good for more than that.

Another suggestion, is to find a local supply house, and post your desires and information on the counter bulletin board.
