Anybody know of a good place to buy scrap steel near the western suburbs of Chicago? I just got a welder and am looking mostly for stuff to practice with so I don't mind mystery metal. Thanks

You might try a fab shop. If it is just for practice then the short and odd shapes they toss will be no problem. This should cost anywhere from cheap to free.
just use the west side of chicago.
There's a place on Powcis Road in West Chicago that used to sell to the public, but I haven't been there in a few years and that was mostly for aluminum and a bit of brass. There are also a couple of places in Aurora, one on Broadway and the other on Sullivan.
