Loosing 17KW

You can't possibly be an electrician - they're busy guys with work to do -

Should have known the ODPM circus was behind this...

Ah but in the C-O-P iirc 'Generators' are the organisation that generate and not a nice rotating thingummy bob that pushes electrons back and forth along variously coloured wiring and any hapless C&G man that gets in the way. Sad how the English Language is getting looser by the day!

Greg,

Come on lad, declare your age - I'm guessing you are somewhere between 16 and 21 but can't get closer than that without help.

Steve

Don't change the subject - classic troll behaviour in a corner -

Amateur Radio is C&G certified too, well it used be anyway.

Steve

US colours ISTR were black /white /green I wonder were they stand for use in the UK (EEC) now, or the funny twistlock supply connectors the US kit used to arrive with.

Steve

The cable is illegal but the twist locks are OK as long as they are in non ferrous metal. Someone sent some to Greg.

For the Boxford? I wonder how long it'll be before he owns up to the fact his has not been rewired yet? :-)

Tom

Dave, read a previous post of mine. It has happened about two years ago by the Lecky board no less.

Which opinion is that? "New rules"? "Approved document P"? The circulars?

About the only difference between what those documents say and what I said is in range [1] of work which needs to be notified - everything else is much the same.

I may not have made one point clear - the new regulations do not require a registered installer to be "competent", but some old ones (the Electricity At Work Regulations iirc) which are still in force did and do require that of any installer who is paid for his work. It appeared that everyone already knew that. There is no legal definition of "competent" or "competent person".

One further point I hadn't picked up on, re larger sheds and workshops - even part P only applies "in a building that receives its electricity from a source located within or shared with a dwelling". Where this is not the case, none of the building regulations apply. Gory details available.

I have no more idea than you about exactly what "receives its electricity from a source located" means though - what or where the source in question is. I'd guess the meter? The transformer? Though "the national grid" would make as much sense.

back in the 1950s or 60s.

for the purpose of catching people out and

I think you will find that the Red/Black colours were not easily differentiated by colour blind people, which is why we changed to Brown/Blue originally.

This is why it is carried over to the three-phase colours now.

Personally I would forbid anyone with colour blindness from working on any electrical/electronic installations or equipment, rather than changing what were pretty bright and visible colours to the muddy stuff we have now.

If the supply comes into a workshop first, and the meter and fuseboard are located in the workshop, then even though a domestic supply may be taken off that board, the main supply per se is classed as industrial.

We went through that when we had 3-phase put in when we moved here, and keep the bills and account in the company name to make sure there is no confusion.

Hubble connectors ISTR?

Amazingly poorly designed and built, yet UL refuse to recognise BS4343 stuff and later derivatives while still allowing the Hubble stuff to be sold for outdoor RV's etc etc.

It's happend a lot and has been rumoured that at least one person has died as a result of the changes, though I've not seen confirmation of thet.

That's very true for now, though becomes harder and harder to argue as time goes bye. Also, as has been pointed out, you can no longer buy red/black twin and earth so the new colours are going to be a bit of a give away 8-)

Greg

Yes it is very dangerous, and nothing more than an accomodation with Europe, I was much happier with red/yellow/blue for three phase, of course it's nothing at all to do with part P 8-).

Part P has no bearing whatsoever on an industrial installation like this, as I have explained but you seem quite unable to grasp, or are you just being selective to give you an excuse to have another poke at me ?.

Greg

And this relates how to the naming of flex ?

If you're referring to my statement that the installations of a generator has to meet the regs then this is stated explicitly in this statute:

Greg

Selective memory again, as has already been said the sellers pack will require house wiring to be inspected thus effectively enforcing the new system, so no change of subject at all.

What's classic is you calling me a troll, and being selective about what you remember.

Greg

Wrong I'm afraid, the IEE's guidance specifically shows a building where the supply is to a business unit and domestic units are taken off that, all the domestic units ARE covered, otherwise there would be a very simple loophole for a building with a business in the ground floor and flats above. all that matters is that there is a single supply from the DNO (what uset to be called the REC but that's another change 8-)).
