News.Individual.Net charging?

Someone on the model engineering NG has suggested that news.individual.net is going to start charging. Anybody here got any news about it?

Are there any other free news servers out there? What do each of you use?

As Usenet seems to be in terminal decline, and a lot of NG are populated by those who indulge in rather silly and infantile outbursts, perhaps it is time to sat, "Farewell" to Usenet?

Yes.

Look in the headers (they aren't secret).

Definitely. Goodbye and good luck in whatever you do next.

Oops! Finally got round to my email account this morning, and there was a message from news.individual.net telling all about it.

As all other subscribers will obviously be in receipt of the same info, clearly this thread ends here with its second posting!*

Sorry to have wasted your time!

*Unless, that is, others of you are using a free service that you could tell me about?

Everybody who subscribes to this service *must* use a valid email address in their headers. Everybody who *obeys* the T's&C's will have been sent an email from the server admin.

Clearly you are in breach of the conditions or you would have received an email.

Therefore, snipped-for-privacy@individual.net has been informed.

Shame on you! You behave like a 5 year old!

Grow up!

Stupid boy!

A Third posting because I've just discovered a relevant NG......alt.free.newsservers.

So sign up to a throwaway email address - plenty of sources - use it to confirm the account exists, or whatever Berlin asks, then never check it again.

Rocket science it aint.

Old Nick.

Yes from 1 April it will cost 10 Euros per year. I have paid. See:

How did you manage to miss Frank Turner-Smith's posting on this topic of yesterday evening?

Especially in the light of the socially-inadequate way in which you refer to him by constantly corrupting his name?

You just wanted to make a fuss, didn't you? Me Me Me Me.....

I use my Yahoo e-mail for news.individual.de, which I do check. I get about

500 messages a day in my 'bulk' folder for that account. Yahoo has pretty good spam filtering, as that sort of thing goes.

As you can see, I have found a substitute so as to avoid the 10 Euros a year. Go to for details. Click on the Union Jack for English. Even then half of it's in Italian, and you have to choose your occupation in Italian (I think 'altro' means other?) and select a province of Italy. I chose Venezia. Lovely place, Venice, providing the wind is in the right direction. I've no idea really where the server actually is. Somewhere in Italy, I presume?

My ISP does have a news server with an open feed, but it's very slow, and about half the time doesn't let me log in for no particular reason (congestion?). It does have a couple of groups I can't get either via Berlin or Italy - ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad and alt.binaries.pictures.motorcycles to name but two.

Not necessarily.

When I joined, the 'valid e-mail address' rule was in force, with a suggestion to use snipped-for-privacy@privacy.net

Later, this was modifed to using snipped-for-privacy@invalid.invalid

Further, their Registration explicitly said that once they sent you the registration details, there was no need to notify them of any change of e-mail address. As the e-mail address I used to register was later dumped due to spam levels, they have no way of contacting me directly. And all this was from obeying the rules. I fear your complaint will founder.
