Rather splendid model railway (live steam)

It's the 10,000 quid toy article - 6 inch guge - set up in a purpose built
shed (the size of a ballroom). The track is assembled as per prototype, complete with bolt on fishplates, chairs etc. Locos run on coke, single tube boilers. Pics are a bit grainy and no track plan as such but it looks like it was a lot of fun.
Sigh

And as it was 112 years ago the price probably corresponded to many Millions of pounds nowadays!

Splendid is the perfect adjective. Multipliers of around 50-100 are generally about right for the turn of the century. It's not straightforward, because obviously the relative price of different items has shifted a lot - so those men building the track would have been paid a relative pittance by todays standards, not just an actual pittance. But something approaching 1m is about right, I would say. Judging by the article, presumably about 2/3 of that was on the room.
