Where Can I Get a Couple of Scrapers

Morning all, hope you are well. Just a quick plea before I rush off to pick up the daughter from the airport. Where can I get a couple of scrapers, maybe a 8/10" flat and a smaller three square. I've looked at the usual culprits but can't seem to see anything listed. A few weeks ago I stumbled on a supplier based in Scotland I think who listed a fair range from a "well known" and A N Other (looked well priced though). Trouble is Google won't give them up this morning. Any clues?

Please don't tell me I should make some I know I should, but at the moment with the garage floor on the missing list and my welding kit on extended loan I have no means of heating a cup of tea let alone an old file. I can't seem to get a good cherry red onthe radiators. Any help would be much appreciated.

Best regards

Keith

AFAIK they're still available under the 'Eclipse' brand, my local tool shop got some in for me a little while ago. I haven't looked in the J&L catalogue, they probably do them but their website is still pretty awful.

Thanks guys some interesting leads for me to follow up. Google eventually gave up the place I had fallen over last week, I wonder if anyone has used them?

Thsy seem to do both the eclispe ones and a cheaper version, perhaps it's worth getting one for each range to see what they are like.

Thanks for your help

If you intend to scrap steel or CI, and can afford it, buy those with HM blades.

My recent experience - for what it's worth, which is probably not much, I've used them and I wasn't impressed. I bought a small Jacobs chuck a couple of months ago and when it eventually arrived I found major bruising within the Jacobs taper and scratches where it had been levered off an arbour previously....unlikely to be factory markings.

I needed it urgently so spent half an hour lapping it onto my own arbour. I didn't want either a refund or a replacement because the item was now in use but I e-mailed Tooledup and informed them, I also offered to sent them photos. They were distinctly cool, unsympathetic and unhelpful. Personally, I won't buy there again.......your mileage may vary. --

You should make one .

I would try Proops as someone else recommended.

I had a good browse on their stand at Ally Pally in January and the scrapers they had, about 6" & 4" as I recall - didn't see any larger, were very cheap and had nice sharp edges on them

Topically, I had decided it was time to work on my ML7 a bit more yesterday and scrape in the rather sticky cross-slide. I'd re-ground and scraped the saddle months ago and had been using it like this, but it needed finishing off and then repainting to match the rest of the lathe as it was looking a bit scruffy:)

Thanks to good planning (hah!) I didn't have a scraper around so ended up doing the usual and making one from an old file. I don't weld so just used a propane torch to anneal/harden. Mine was made from a 10" file and to be honest I could have done with a much shorter one, so I'll probably buy a couple from Proops at the next show.

Some pics of the scraper & results here:

Some years back there was a guy on ebay selling Millers Falls Tool Co, sets of 3 scrapers, Set No 740, new in boxes for $17 plus postage. We got a set over that Xmas as they were relatively cheap even with $12 postage.

All were curved form, 1.5", 2.5" and 3.5" edges, nice varnished wooden handles etc.

Thanks for all the ideas guys, I found one in stock at my local Cromwells so that will get me started. I can't resist the price of the ones from Proops though and will order a couple of smaller ones on Monday to see if they're any good. I need a set of bearing scrapers so will risk E-bay for those before funds run out. Oh b***ger* wife's getting up (it's her birthday) so off to start "fussing duties", have a good day.
