New Jersey LEUP Questions

Can anyone offer any advice or experiences on getting a LEUP in New Jersey?

- Are there any state requirements in addition to local requirements?

- I live in a bi-level house where the garage is actually under a potion of the living quarters. Is this still considered an "attached" garage for purposes of getting a storage variance? Located in the garage, a magazine might be just about 75' from any other house.

- It isn't clear from what I've read, but is a variance available for a detached building? I have an 8 x 12 shed in the back yard that can be made secure and is approx 30 feet from the nearest house.

Thanks,

Carl Smith

It sounds like you could put a type 4 mag in the shed. Only a free standing magazine needs 75'. The security of the shed will reflect upon how secure your magazine has to be. Some people had the mag sold by Magnum Rockets rejected due to the locks. But I suspect they secured their shed with a paper clip. The more secure the shed, the less you have to spend on locks for the mag.

There's a lock upgrade kit available that is supposed to meet the specs. You can get it for $15 from

Carl,

I'm in NJ and got my LEUP in 2004. I built a homemade type-4 magazine starting with a steel Sears craftsman toolbox and padlocks from McMaster-Carr. I store it in a freestanding garden shed in my backyard, which is about 80' from my house. Both my local fire marshall and the BATF agent who came out to see me were easy to deal with. Before you do anything, talk to your local fire marshall 1st to make sure there are no storage restrictions or local regulations in your town. If you want more detail, advise, or have more questions, feel free to drop me an email.

My fire marshall actually preferred the magazine be stored in the attached garage instead of a shed. He said the garage would be more secure than a shed.
