Fortunately that front that's been dragging through here since Tuesday pushed Charlie farther East than originally forecast. Light rain and no wind here. Whew! Anybody on here from central Florida is probably not unscathed.

I've got friends vacationing in Venice which is a bit North of landfall of Punta Gorda. There were some casualties in Punta Gorda. My friends in Venice said it was a scary ride but they're okay. Cheers,

And you good folks are afraid of earthquakes?

At least they are easured in seconds and only do damage every few years. Big (actually moderate) shakes like Loma Prieta come every ten to fifteen years.

Hurricanes allow one the privilege of hiding underground if it's available. I don't think that's recommended in earthquakes. :Þ

I worked for the Red Cross as a shelter manager after Hurricane Andrew.

Shall never forget my day off, driving down to see Kermit Weeks at the ruins of his air museum. Drove for miles and miles and never saw an intact building.

After a major earthquake, at least in this country (worked many here, in Mexico and elsewhere), the damage may be widespread, but rarely total.

The last time the US was hit with a catastrophic earthquake was in the early eighteenth century. That was the New Madrid quake. It devestated areas on either side of the Mississippi from the Gulf to the Canadian border. While it even re-routed the river, the population was so small then there were few casualties.

Today that would cause damage in the hundreds of billions of $$ and thousands of casualties.

Had a friend back in the sixties who moved to Utah because "California was going to fall into the ocean". She oved back after being trapped in her cabin for two days when it collapsed....(drum roll) in one of the strongest earthquakes Utah ever had.

Then there are fires..........:-(

When a huge earthquake hit China in the 60s the coal miners emerged from underground to find their city destroyed. Ironically one of safest places to be during an earthquake is underground. I believe it is because the building fall on top of people and thats what does the most killing.
