German armor primer red?

Oct 19, 2004 5 Replies

I'm looking at some color plates of a King Tiger II and it says that it was painted with green and yellow over a primer coat of red. Obviously this could lead to a long thread, but I hope not. Just looking for some opinions and was there a RAL or similar number applied to this paint? What color have you used to replicate it? Thanks

Some German model sites suggest Humbrol Brick Red. Might be a little bright, but the real thing apparently wasn't a deep rust color, and definitely not like the dark red lead used on ship bottoms. Maybe cut Model Master Rust with a little Dark Yellow. Check out:

Owens

RAL 3009, its a couple of shades lighter than the standard red/brown RAL

8012. Lighten for scale effect though.

I have found that Model Master Burnt Sienna is a great match for this color. It is in their figure paint line under Model master II.

Thanks a bunch fella's. I really do appreciate all the suggestions and now "a shopping I will go!"
