japanese mini sub

is there a kit of the early war japanese mini sub? the kind the uss ward sunk? i saw the show about finding that one and the vindication of the ward crew. i guess they had been lableled bullshit artists for years. took a while, but at least some were alive to see it. i have a kaiten and a 400, so now i need this. type s?

Try one of the Japanese on line vendors. You are looking for a Fine Molds type A midget submarine kit. 1/72 I think.

The model will be a little over a foot long. There isn't a whole lot of detail to be lost.

is it pretty complete or can i detail it more? for some reason, i want to go nuts and do a rivet counter kit and make it perfect. i learned from expirience that the ijn will not answer questions about the mini subs, so ill need good resources. i'd love to give it ti the ward's association. but i need to get moving.

the model includes surface welds. There are rivets on the tail fins.

That's probably because you referred to them as the IJN rather that the Japanese Naval Self Defense Force. That was bound to raise hackles, and you were lucky they didn't behead you on the spot. The only sub that's still under IJN control is the Atragon:

plans are secret! You must print them out and eat them after viewing them on your computer! Then you must set fire to the computer! Those are orders from Captain Jinguji himself! :-D

Paramount out of Quebec did one (a repop of a Japanese toy/model) a long time ago. While the model wasn't the most accurate, the boxart was catching. Here's an example:

I'll bet they'll issue both the Kaiten and midget sub as separate kits also. I pointed this set out before but if you want a whole bunch of 1/72 scale suicide weapons at once, latch on to this set of preassembled ones:
