OT alt.binaries and rar files

I have a couple of questions that you may be able to help with.

I've never been able to see pictures in alt.binaries.models.scale and I don't know why. A recent Google search suggested that I need to be able to open .rar files to be able to see the pictures. Is this right or is there more to it?

Assuming it's of use to me, has anyone had experience of using a shareware program called Winrar 3.51? Is it any good and are there any drawbacks to its use?

Any suggestions will be gratefully received!

I think it's your server. Your provider may not be supporting binaries due to bandwidth. With earthlink I had good service, but now in France I am lucky to get 33% of the images. Some providers don't even have any usenet support anymore at all.

But I know there may be even better answers then that.

No, that's definitely not your problem. Photos are almost never posted as RAR files. RAR is a method of chopping up one huge file into smaller pieces, and photos are usually small enough that they don't need to be split for posting.

You probably just need a better newsreader program. Free Agent is one popular choice. Go to for a list of what else is available, and links to where you can find them.

The other possibility is that the news server you're using is filtering out all the photos and other attachments. Some cheap ISPs do this to save money, which is how they're able to charge less for internet service than other companies. If you can't find a newsreader that lets you see the photos in ABMS, ask your ISP whether their news server is blocking the attachments.

I don't bother messing around with .rar files and I haven't seen any in abms. I have run into them in other binaries groups but I skip them. OTOH, I use Netscape 4.7 and have no problem viewing the pics on abms.

Perhaps you are assuming that all the messages to alt.binaries have pictures, this would be a wrong assumption. You can tell which messages have pictures attached by looking at the size of the message, if the messages is over a few k size such as 1k or 2k large, then it is just a text message. If the message is far bigger such as 156k then it would have a picture attached. I do know that at times some people have attached pictures that for some reason only appear in the pictures source code and as such appear as a jumble of letters and symbols, but almost always they appear as a proper picture.

I hope this may be a help
