Re: "Red Baron" Color Questions

From what I've seen, it seems the red was rather thinned down. When applied to the standard Fokker streaked finish, some of the darker streaking sort of showed through and made the red look darker. Over the areas of the national markings where there was a white background, the red was lighter due to the white affecting the red color.

FYI: Meteor Productions just released two 1/32 scale decal sheets for the Dr-1. One has several of the red and partially red aircraft of the Red Baron. The other has Lothar's aircraft as one of the choices.

This is the description of the actual piece of fabric held at the Australian War Memerial

"Linen; Paint; A rectangular piece of red painted linen which has been carefully trimmed on all sides. The blood red paint on the obverse is uneven and lumpy with some chipping disclosing the original linen underneath. The donor has written a brief summary of its provenance in pen on the reverse.

This piece of linen was cut from the fuselage of Manfred von Richthofen's Fokker DR1 within 24 hours of the aircraft being shot down on 21 April 1918 near Australian lines. The donor sent the sample to his mother from France. "
