Tornado GR1B 12 Sqn

Apr 30, 2006 3 Replies

Hi, I am looking for the serial number of a 12 Sqn RAF Tornado GR1B, photo of the aircraft showing the serial would be nice as I have so far been unable to find any pictures. Dates would be from mid 1995 until they converted to GR4. I don't know if they used individual code letters at the time or not so help with that would also be great.

Thanks in advance

should find this quite informative.

'm afraid that it doesn't show the serial, but it is ZA490. Why on *earth* they had to tuck the serial under the flaps, I'll never know. What's wrong with on the fin, like the F3s?

a list of all the GR1B serials.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much Enzo

That was exactly what I was looking for.

I agree with you about the serials, the currant position laves a lot to be desired, in other words it's a pain in the ass!!!!

Once again

Thanks a Lot !!

Glad to have been of help.

The location of serials on the Tornado GRs was always a problem. Apparently the reasoning behind the placement under the flaps was that the fin got filthy because of the exhaust staining from the thrust reversers. That never seemed logical to me, because F3s have serials on the fin and the F3 squadrons just tend to clean their aircraft more often. Besides, the serials on Harriers were always getting covered by dirt from the exhaust nozzles - we used to have to clean them every month or so. There is no substitute for good aircraft husbandry...
