UK Museums

Any specific interests? This is a must.

I travelled to the UK in 1997 and 2001 and visited a bunch of aviation museums. I have pictures posted at

Was in Duxford two years ago. Spent less than an hour. Nowhere near enough time. 4-5 hours is what I'd ask as a minimum next time.

I'd recommend the RAF Museum in north London, near Colindale tube station.

Chatham Dockyard, Portsmouth Dockyard are both interesting and I've heard good things about 'Firepower!' at Woolwich Arsenal/Dockyard and the Bovington Tank Museum. All depends on your interests and what parts of the UK you plan on visiting. If you want, I can get a brand new road atlas of the UK and send it you for about £10 (Paypal or Nochex accepted!), let me know if that's any help.

There is the British Army Museum just across the river from the IWM and Waterloo Station.

If you can get to Shrivenham (Salisbury is the closest city/town,) There is a great collection of combat vehicles in the Museum of the Royal Military College of Science.

For a hotel in Salisbury, I recommend the Red Lion. Will be quite an experience for a non-Brit.

Unfortunately RMCS is not open to the public, though is an excellent collection.

The Royal Military College of Science is at Shrivenham near SWINDON - which is MILES away from Salisbury !!

At least it was when I attended a computer course there a few years back.........

Another good museum (if you are into that sort of thing) is the Royal Navy Submarine Museum at Gosport in Hampshire -

Just off the top of my head - HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, D-Day museum, Royal Marines Museum - all in Portsmouth, Submarine Museum, Naval Firepower (forget the name?), Hovercraft Museum - all in Gosport, Museum of Flight/RJ Mitchell museum in Southampton.

Further up the road there is an aviation museum at Tangmere.

The Coventry Air Museum (on Rowley Road and right by the Airport) is worth a look. There are some interesting exhibits, much of it RAF related, but there are several airframes that have been rescued from USAF bases in the UK after use as BDR a/c. The F-4C they have has been completly repainted in Vietnam era camo.

I think that they have a website, but try typing in 'Coventry Air Museum' on the google search engine.
