A good question. Google or not, it's still hard to find things. That's why this used to be such a great place. You could find everything here, planes, armor, sci-fi, ships etc. I'm sure there are a lot of old hands that could use a list of "where & what" pointers. I still miss the mon-key........ Got a B-10 in the stash.
Its true that RMS has sort of become that uncle the family does not talk about, but it is still a source for info, off topic humour, etc. that you may not find in the FSM or other group forums. The reason I don't go to them much is that I forget about them. I have
20 or so google groups that I visit and find I like to putz around them - easier to access, etc, don't need to remember passwords, etc... the only other forum that I have posted on is hyperscale. If forums had an option where you could be notified that a response to your query has been posted it would be a great help for me, otherwise I'm probably gonna forget what I posted and where I posted it.
Web forums have their ups and downs. Downs include corruption of the MySQL database for example :-) Or DDOS attacks. And speed. And page rendering. And browser problems. And crappy styles, non-threading, and other deficiencies of a particular forum design.
The ups are more features for those that value that sort of thing.
Personally I am happy with some forums like ModelWarships.com and the wonderful resource at JAircraft.com, but others like SteelNavy are so retarded that they are useless as forums unless you like to waste hours of your time for little actual reading done.
I think Usenet still has lots of life in it, actually. And maybe someone will figure out a good interface (better than Google groups) that will permit easier interface. You know, things like News to Mail interfaces are quite good and Usenet groups and mailing lists live together quite well as a result.
I still miss the mailing list for SMML which is now a Yahoo group, hard to follow and crappy mail format.

I still like the Usenet format. I use Xnews, text based and very fast. I am subscribed to a number of Yahoo groups, but I don't read them much 'cuz the threading is for the birds.
Steelnavy is OK, you need to develop a style for it. I open each thread that I'm interested in in a new tab. Usually when I go there it's interesting enough to make it worthwhile. I tried MW recently it was OK, I've done Hyperscale. Ick.

Finally chucked the whole thing. Too big a pain in my ass.
I'll visit Starship Modeller, but rarely, since they make you logon to read the damn general discussion forum. What was with that, anyway?
ModelWarship/SteelNavy I'll read for the reviews, that is about it.
IPMS USA now has a forum available to non-IPMS members. There is a "Bullpen" forum available to only IPMS members that allows off-topic/ off color discussion.
Armorama is an active modeling forum as well. That website hosts other non-Armorama forums and while they are integrated, they are also semi- stand alone forums. If someone approached them to host RMS as a forum, they would probably do it.
I mention the two forums above because they are multi-genre forums like RMS is.
MW is my favourite web forum site, so I should at least put in my love of it here :-) The forums are actually very informatative, especially the "Calling all fans" threads where all information on a particular ship, class or type are collected for reference. Very nice for modeling since many folks put up detailed model shots, historical photos or plans, and the like. Ever wanted to model an accurate Vincennes or a Quincy from the 1/700 Trumpeter/Pitroad kits? There you can find your answers.
I remember those good old days too. I prefer the simplicity of this RMS group and don't care to learn all those newfangled web page tricks and password protected exclusive club memberships. Maybe its just me. I like my privacy and do not give out personal details sought by many subscriber groups for something as inconsequential as a hobby or a shopping site.
