CTDT with ACAD files and external references

Has anybody had experience with SW2003 SP3.1 crashing when loading and AutoCad dwg file with external references? Needless to say I don't have the file ACAD would be trying to reference.

Do you need the xref? If not, open the dwg in acad, "detach" the xref, save
