E-Drawings question

Is it possible to create a model e-drawing and view the model custom properties in the e-drawing viewer?

Dear Phil,

You can display mass properties for CAD files or eDrawings part and assembly files. You can also set the units and precision for mass properties.

To display mass properties:

Open a part or assembly file in the eDrawings Viewer.

Click Mass Properties , or click Tools, Mass Properties.

The Mass Properties dialog box appears. The box lists the Material, Density, Mass, Volume, and Surface area of the model.

To set the unit of measure used for length, select the Length unit from the menu.

To set the precision used for all mass properties, select the number from the Decimal places menu.

The mass properties box updates dynamically.

Click OK.

Hope this helps but make it sure that you have defined the material in the solidworks before making e-drawing

Regards

Hi Deepak,

thanks for the reply but we want to go much deeper than that.

We are trying to move to more model based definition, less dimensioned drawings. Unfortunately as we deal with certification authorities, in this case Transport Canada, they must have full access to the model based definition without having special software to do it. E-Drawings seemed to be the answer but, although I can embed all the data I need into the custon properties of the model ie date modelled, date checked, rev level, surface finish, general surface GD&T etc etc it cannot subsequently be 'seen' in e-drawings. At least I dont think so.

Any ideas?

Phil

Phil,

How about using the "Drawing" in E-drawing. Instead of embedding the model in a dimensioned drawing how about creating a drawing that looks like a data sheet. Insert the model in the top corner and link the custom properties of the model to the "datasheet". This way the "Model" contains manufacturing data while the datasheet is used as a conduit for the meta data.

This is the only work-around I can think of - Parametric models are great at defining geometry - not so good at conveying "real world" data to downstream users/applications.

Hi Len, thanks for the suggestions will take a look at it. I think I will also ask for an e drawing mod to reflect custom properties, shouldn't be too hard to do.

Dear Phil,

Sorry I was away on leave. Well I agree with whta Len has said and that will be good idea to do. I feel you can use comments in the the E drawing model to reflect the custom properties within the model.

hope this works.

While you are at it ask them for the ability to display custom properties in the tree. Right now it is the filename. Not everyone uses descriptive file names so having the ability to show the filename and a description field would be nice.
