This has been a problem since 04, and I guarantee SW has heard about it. The only workaround I'm aware of is to go back to the Excel BOM where you actually have control over column width.
New BOM Table Field Size

Why is it that SW doesn't allow me to make smaller fields. the Qty and Item No fields could be much smaller but SW will not let me shrink them past a certain point is there any way to override this. The new BOM is way too big for our drawings and would be just right if I had more controll.

I know that if you set the font size smaller than the default you can get the row heights smaller. It may work with width also (dunno). It may make it tolerable. But one thing is for sure, it will still be a lot wider than needed.
Yep, I've complained too.
What I've done is: Pick in the QTY. box. In the feature manager pick the Column Properties, in the Title text box change the title to a period (or a single character). Then adjust the column width (RMB on the column then pick: Formatting/ Column Width). Then go back and change the title back to what it was.
This has worked for me in some situations.

Cool, I'll have to try that. As far as spacing above and below the text, you can change the font from using 'Points' to inches. Then make sure the spacing is set to '0'. You will gain a smidge or a tad or maybe even a wee-bit when you re-size.
