I am currently on 2004 Sp2.1, cant upgrade yet as we are in the middle of a project.
If I am in assembly mode and insert new model, select part and then save the model name Solidworks goes into a neverending Editing Assembly, this happens every time.
Any help appreciated.

Updating to a service pack isn't like updating to a new version. Files are still backward compatible.
If they fixed it and you won't apply the SP, you don't have many options.
