Using Rotate View (i.e. Orbit)

I am having a hard time with the Rotate View feature in SW. Specifically, when ever I attempt to rotate around the object to view the back side, the object ends up twisted. Lets see if I can explain that phrase "twised" with more clarity... what was left-right on the object, is now up-down.

Ideally, what I would like to do is to rotate the object as though I were walking around it. I.e. my viewpoint stays at the same elevation.

I know I can just use the pre-set views to accomplish this, but I would like to make better use of this rotate command.

Any advice?

Joe,

Here's one approach that works for me.

[1] Select an edge around which you'd like to rotate.

You do this by highlighting the edge (just move the cursor over it) and clicking the middle mouse button.

[2] Rotate.

Click and hold down the middle mouse button and move the mouse. The model should rotate about the selected edge.

This, then, requires one click and one click and hold.

It'd be nice to be able to be able to do the same w/respect to XYZ axis emanating from the origin, but once I got the above to work I stopped looking.

Thanks for the reply, but your method doesn't work on my computer. It just does the normal rotate. I am on Version 2005 sp3.0.

I have the same version, and you have to select the edge, then double click with the middle button.

I'm on 2005 SP0.1. I simply can't afford to burn time discovering what might be broken if I update right now. Bummer on the double-click part, that's just not fun.

Yes, the double middle-button click worked. (actually it is a roller for me). Thanks for the tip.
