Caboose Industries Ground Throws 218S and 202S

Hi, In looking at

website, they show both ground throws available.



However, the 218S photo shows the ground throw in KIT form, and the



202S in ASSEMBLED form. (I don't if their web site is showing these ground throws as they really are! I've been fooled before.)

Yet, the assembled form, 202S, is cheaper! (?)



Question: Are they BOTH in Kit form, are they hair-puller-outers to assemble? Are there better ground throws available that are preassembled? With 78 year old eyes, I dread assembling anything from couplers to ground throws! Thanks very much, as always. I depend on this NG for my MR questions. I'm ready for ground throws, bumbers and then scenery. Wiring is a snap since I don't wish to bother with BLOCK control at this time.

All the Caboose Hobby 218S I use all have come assembled.

The 218 comes with adaptors for various switch manufactureres. They just snap on to the end of the pivot rod. The 202 has a pin at the end of the arm to fit into a hole on the throwbar of the switch. The 'S' on the end of the number indicates that they are 'sprung'. This makes them a little more forgiving regarding the placement of the groundthrow. Either one will work, but you might have to drill a hole in the throwbar for the 202. Again, not hard to do after the first one.

202's are assembled, and take about 15 seconds to install. (Well, maybe I exagerate there, but it does almost take longer to describe how to install them than it does to actually do it. I use them exclusively.) Drill a hole in the throwbar of the turnout, position the ground throw so the handle is vertical and the turnout is "halfway thrown" and drive in two screws or small nails.

Maybe Caboose Industries builds two different styles, but I just bought 10 -

218S ground throws and all were assembled and ready to install. Advantage is they are smaller than the 202's and will fit between parallel tracks where the 202 will not.
