F&SM F units

How do we recognise excellence? Do we rely on our individual judgement, or so we accept the consensus view? Because this seems to be the crux of the matter. The consensus appears to be that the F&SM is an excellent model railroad, whereas my judgement tells me that it's not.

You could, or you could easily resolve that issue with research. Which is why I use the ORER and other resources.

On a layout that portrays a road with interchange traffic, yes, you would. Even so, research could resolve this issue, as well. But in general, having cars that may not have been on-line at a given moment is a compromise I prepared to make.

I will say at least, through the photo spreads I've seen, that the F&SM is at least a very detailed model railroad. How accurate I couldn't say. The weathering appears a bit overdone for my taste, and there's little civic pride evidenced by the amount of trash and faded paint around.

I have not studied the operational possibilities of the layout.

Your comments express my own feelings on this subject almost exactly.

Any large construction effort, like a model railroad, ought to be built to some COMMON standard. Anything substantially better, or certainly worse, than that standard will look out of place. The 'overly good' items will make all else look BAD, probably much worse than they really are.

a model of a prototype can be judged in TWO ways. One way is accuracy to the prototype ... the other how well the model 'captures' the LOOK of the prototype. These are two different things, and strict adherence to one destroys the other. Most of us strive for some balance between the two.

And a model of a fantasy is hard to judge by anyone but it's creator. Only that person knows what the 'prototype' even IS. Craftsmanship can still be judged by anyone, but not accuracy.

Dear Sirs, I don't know what city Mr. Sellios' layout is in, but I deeply apologize for opening this can of worms...

I did some research and those aren't F units at all. They could be experimental gas-turbo-electric units powered by the A. Zol Co., of Franklin. They failed to operate well, and the carbodies were bought by EMD and re-engined for the first FT's. On the other hand, it is also possible that you are seeing evidence of the secret 'Boston Experiment', involving the teleportation of a freight train, which as you all know went horribly wrong. I assure you my sources are very reliable, and would gladly refer you to them, only I can't reveal their names...

Anyhow, I feel there is no such thing as an anachronism, since I just made 4 BLUE PRINTS today.

My opinion: '57 Eldo. Fins, chrome, it had it all, plus the Cadillac cachet. Worth way more in crappy condition than a '57 Bel Air in same. Can't discount the '59 Electra either. A face that could scare the crap out of a drunk fallen down in front of it.

Check the July 4th show at Holz Chevy. A guy had a beautiful gold one for sale

2 years ago. Not sure which model, pretty sure it wasn't a Ranger. Might have been a Corsair.

He kept a spare set of transmission relays and jumper wire in the trunk. He said he could test and change out the complete set in 20 minutes or less.
