Hi all,
What type of steam engine is the Polar Express modeled after? What era
and locale of operation was that from? I am very new to this hobby,
and would like to find one in HO Scale - not necessarily the Polar
Express, but the real train it was modeled after.
Thanks!
The movie Polar Express locomotive is a manipulated image of ex Pere
Marquette Berkshire No. 1225 which is preserved in Michigan. (The actual
loco number being 12/25 is just a pleasant coincidence. There was a very
good article on the visual and audio recordings made of the actual loco in
order to make the film in Trains magazine about a year ago.) The PM berks
are typical Van Sweringen types - almost exact copies of the Nickel Plate
berks - and are well represented by either the Proto 2000 model or the older
Rivarossi model. However, both of the models are scale representations of
the actual prototype, and they do not have the oversized cow catcher seen on
the movie representation. Geezer
