Sourthern Railway Green

Aug 07, 2004 3 Replies

I seem to recall that there was some kind of celebration (anniversary) associated with the painting of Southern Railway diesels green instead of the traditional black... can anyone please fill in the gaps?

Frank,

The Southern diesel engines were in the green paint scheme, then went to the 'Tuxedo' paint scheme. They repainted the passenger engines back to green when they did not join Amtrak and went on their own, IIRC.

I'm pretty certain that it 's the GP59 that caused the fuss. The original repaint was at the instigation of an NS engineer - see

Yes, that's the color scheme, but apparently it had nothing to do with some sort of special "event"... such as an anniversary, etc. Right?
