What chance an engine these days

I was wondering what the situation is with engines these days... I would love to pick up something like a Lister D, or other similar sized engine. Do they still turn up grubby looking for a TLC owner, and if not, what sort of prices are they fetching...

I last looked at them all in the late nineties, only just getting back into things after a long enforced break...

I looked and winced at the engines on Evil bay... Nope money's tight round these parts, and I need something to keep me tinkering in the workshop, and hopefully an engine somewhere in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire area would be sooooo convenient.

Auctions attached to rallies (like the Lister Tyndale rally tomorrow) can throw up engines like the ones you are looking for. Also keep an eye your local free ads paper, it can be surprising what turns up in them.

I noticed several Lister D's & Wolseley WD's in the SW free ads paper, "Trade it". last week.

They are still about. Running unrestored examples sans trolley - £30-£40, more if trollied, twice that if a Lister original trolley. Restored, £60 - £100 on a decent trolley, price according to condition.

Wolseleys are more sought after & about 20% more expensive, although I have seen particularly good unrestored examples change hands for £100 plus.

Any open crank engine on a trolley that goes and is in reasonable nick is probably going to be £500. Twice that for a good sideshaft engine.

Good names like Crossley, Ruston-Hornsby, Blackstone et al will always command a decent price.

All just my opinion, you understand.

Kim Siddorn.
