Wasn't that an April Fool, though? They (RM) went through a period where they would have April fool articles. Another I remember was of an model of the London Underground built under someones flooboards.

No, the small scale live steam models were real - built by Arthur Sherwood - an Australian. The article appeared in Model Railways in the 70s and the smallest loco he built was to a scale of 1:240 - smaller than Z. I can probably dig the magazine article out when I get back home at the weekend and do a scan.

Agreed, two friends of mine have them which they displayed at an exhibition last year. Great to show the public, but very little control and no good for shunting (not that you would use an A3 or A4).

For the adults it was very entertaining watching David and Brian try to control them, fortunanly, they are two very polite gents and nothing more than a smile graced their lips for the day ! See :

Papyrus is pulling a rake of British Industrial Sand hoppers in "homage" of the sand trains that used to run on the CVR. Highly unprototypical but it was a contrast to the A4 hauled Gresley coaches on the other track.
They are fun to operate and the watering and oiling ritual is part of that fun. Another part is trying to stop them where intended and to start off slowly. Beating ones own endurance record between fill ups is another goal. (30 mins so far). I haven't had enough practice I must admit.
Overall though, I think I get more pleasure from shunting my Bachmann sound fitted Class 20 up and down. I allow myself to do both and it's all good fun!
