Not sure about that, Gresley certainly didn't design them to run in that area, and remember Gresley designed loco for a job that needed doing - not a class that would do many jobs IYSWIM.

Well an Thomson L1 would not look out of place on a ex GWR or LMS line as they were used quite widely on the old GC lines.

Hmmm - I'd better check an old Locoshed, and I think I've got one of those RCTS books. I think I'd reached my "just about likely" stage regarding buying, but I'm finding the time period limit I try to keep to keeps going back...

Apparently so - the RCTS volume covering L1s mentions 6 Scottish-destined engines swapped with V1/V3s after delivery (1948-50) and 5 to Norwich in 1950 for a similar swap. Locoshed for Summer 1950 has 67663-4 and 67677 allocated to Norwich. Probably enough for me, but I'm saving for the Jinty instead.

Folks, I'm always a bit worried about the balance of model 0-4-4 tanks. With modern small motors I suppose that it would be possible to get such a motor well forward so that most of its weight is over the driving wheels, with the trailing bogie just supporting the rear end on a light spring. With too much pressure on this spring the rear drivers could lift and derail. Or should the drive go both to the main wheels and the bogie wheels with a centrally mounted motor, probably not impossible. This could give a better balanced loco.Many years ago I had a Triang M7, I think that these had the motor back in the side tank and firebox area. From my remembrance, it was rather light-footed. There is no problems in this area, unless you do support [1] the rear end (truck) via a spring, if the rear tuck is made to take some of the weight (aka the 'Fleixchas' way) there will be no problems.

You need the front axles to have some vertical movement - perhaps mount the drivers and mechanisim as a motor bogie - then the loco sits and runs like a bogie coach.

I have a SEF SECR 'H' Class kit, which I've put a simple copper strip bent in two as a spring mounted on the rear bogie. It holds the front end down reasonably well, and the loco performs quite well. There is an issue with a tight spot (down to chassis alignment I think), but that's nothing to do with the bogie spring.
